The Repainting Schedule for HardiePlank® Siding

When doing maintenance for a home, it’s helpful to think of every part of the house as being on a separate timer. Your roof will need to be replaced every so often. Your hardwood floors will have to be sanded and re-stained at certain times, as well.

For the exterior of your house, it will need to be painted on a schedule that will depend on three factors. Thankfully, HardiePlank, a brand of fiber cement siding, is more forgiving in how often it needs to be repainted.

1. Type of Siding

When asking how often to paint your exterior, it’s not as simple as finding a one-size-fits-all number. Depending on what type of siding you have, this number of years can vary quite dramatically.

  • Wood Siding may need to be repainted every three years! There are also problems with rotting and insects that make maintaining a wood exterior more difficult.
  • Aluminum Siding should be repainted every five years on average. You’ll definitely know if you notice any signs of fading or chalking. However, Aluminum is also susceptible to corrosion, denting and scratches making it difficult to maintain.
  • Stucco Siding should also be repainted every five years and can be more difficult to maintain in comparison to the previous two. While Stucco is generally known for its durability, if it cracks you can expect water damage, mold growth, and insect infestations. You will also need to regularly clean the exterior of your home to avoid grimy discoloration.
  • Fiber Cement Siding, especially HardiePlank, can go 10 or even 15 years between exterior paint finishes if done properly by a professional. It needs to be primed and several good layers of paint to achieve the best results, as it is with all paint jobs.

2. Climate

Another important factor is your locale’s climate as weather can take a heavy toll on a home’s siding. Hotter climates cause paint to crack and fade while brutal winters warp siding and cause moisture damage. Here in the Raleigh Durham area of North Carolina, we have a reasonably moderate climate for three of four seasons, but the summers can be extremely hot with high humidity levels.

While extreme temperatures expand and contract wood and other materials, fiber cement siding, like HardiePlank, does not fluctuate in this way. This material’s stability and endurance keeps your exterior paint jobs healthy even longer than most.

3. Professional Application & Materials

Lastly, it’s very important to choose a professional service that is transparent about the work they do. HardiePlank needs to have proper priming and the right number of paint coats if you want your finish to last for decades to come.

We often recommend a lighter color of paint as they tend to be more reflective and therefore extend the paint job’s lifespan. Darker colors, while quite moody, absorb sunlight which can accelerate cracking and fading. It’s also important to choose the right quality and type of paint to avoid any unnecessary set backs.
